Where can you find the best brunch in Costa del Sol?

The best breakfast and brunch in Costa del Sol, Spain

Whether you are on holiday or living along the sunny coast, it is always a nice treat to head out for breakfast or brunch. And in Spain, you will certainly find a lot to choose from, with cafés and restaurants open around the clock.

If you are looking for a traditional, Spanish breakfast, you won’t have to look far. You can get a pan con tomate or another type of sandwich, some churros, fresh orange juice and coffee right about everywhere. And if you head to a local cafeteria, it won’t cost you more than a few euros. But what about if you are in the mood for something a bit more unique?

Luckily, you can get a bit of everything in Spain. Especially in big cities such as Marbella and Malaga, you will find many restaurants serving all-day breakfast or offering weekend brunch deals. Here you can expect to find classic dishes such as avocado toast, eggs benedict and pancakes on the menu, as well as local favourites.

As a lover of breakfast food and a dedicated brunch-goer, I have tried many breakfast and brunch spots where I live in Mijas and in nearby cities along Costa del Sol. And after two years of “research”, I am ready to share my top insider tips! Just like my guide on the best brunch in Malta, I have gathered my findings and will here go through the very best restaurants and cafés for brunch in Costa del Sol. It’s written from a local’s perspective with a mix of well-known spots and hidden gems for all budgets.

Top 6 spots for breakfast and brunch in Marbella and nearby cities

In Costa del Sol, you will be spoilt for choice. In the more international cities such as Malaga, Marbella and Mijas, there are hundreds of restaurants all serving their own unique dishes. And many are actually specialised in the area of breakfast and brunch! So no matter if you wish to wake up early or sleep in and have your eggs at noon, you will be able to enjoy a delicious start to the day at the following breakfast and brunch restaurants located along the sunny coast.

1. Tasty Bakery, Mijas Costa

Tasty is a local, family-run bakery that started out in a small shop two years ago. Here you can find counters filled with sweet delights such as tarts, cakes, cookies and more. And the talented bakers create stunning cakes for birthdays and other special occasions. The owner of the bakery is from Argentina, so there are also lots of Argentinian specialities offered – including “alfajores“. But it is not only sweet dishes on the menu, as you can also get delicious sandwiches, savoury croissants, meat-filled empanadas and more.

Thanks to its popularity, the business has expanded in size and moved into a new, larger and more open location in May 2022. Just around the corner from its original spot, Tasty now offers a grand location with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. This means that you can grab some breakfast on the go or sit down to enjoy a coffee and a sweet or savoury dish. No matter what you choose, the quality is amazing and the price point is very reasonable.

Details of Tasty Bakery
 • Where: C. Acuario, 55, Local 17 Primera Planta, 29649 Las Lagunas de Mijas, Málaga

2. The Jammy Olive Café, Calahonda

If you are looking for full English, avocado toast or another classic breakfast dish for a good price, The Jammy Olive is a great option. At this cute café, you can enjoy breakfast until 12:30 every day of the week. The breakfast menu is large with lots of options for savoury, sweet, healthy and greasy dishes. You can also try some homemade cakes and enjoy freshly squeezed orange juice and delicious coffee.

The café is located in Calahonda with tables both outside and inside. The service is always quick and friendly, and there are many cute details to look out for (such as the various salt and pepper shakers).

 • Where: Calle Mérida de Jarales, 12-13, 29649 Calahonda, Málaga

3. Banana Kitchen, Mijas

This favourite I have discovered quite recently and fully fell in love with. Banana Kitchen is a hidden gem located in the centro comercial Centro Idea above Fuengirola, on the way up to Mijas Pueblo. As soon as you enter this little hideout, it will feel as if you have stepped into an oasis. There are flowers all around, stylish furniture and cute decor outside and inside, and friendly staff waiting.

On the menu, you’ll find a good amount of breakfast and brunch dishes served all day. This includes homemade sourdough bread, protein pancakes and açaí bowls all served with delicious toppings. The flavoured ice coffee is also one of the best I’ve ever had, for the small price of €3. If you are not in the mood for traditional breakfast food though, there is plenty more to choose from. How about a homemade pizza and a glass of wine? On Fridays and Saturdays, all pizzas are €10 only!

4. Rosas Café, Marbella

Rosas Café is a bit posher but still won’t break the bank. Located in Puerto Banus, this café is all pink and insta-friendly. The menu is a magazine, there’s a flower wall and swing loveseat inside, and lots of beautiful details all around. But it is not just all about appearance here. The menu is full of delicious, healthy and quite recently priced dishes and cakes – including a large selection of all-day breakfast and brunch.

Choose between eggs royale, homemade crêpes, açaí bowls and more for a tasty and beautifully plated breakfast dish. Combine it with a specialty coffee, natural juice or a cheeky glass of cava. Don’t forget to check out the cake counter where mouthwatering cupcakes and other treats are waiting. And if you happen to bring a four-legged friend, there’s even a special menu for dogs.

 • Where: Gaviotas IV, Av. Playas del Duque, Local 3, 29660 Marbella, Málaga

5. Hustle N’ Flow, Marbella

Similar to Rosas, Hustle N’ Flow is another restaurant serving up tasty, healthy and Instagram-friendly dishes. Also here you can enjoy all-day brunch food such as bowls, toasts, pancakes and more. No matter what you choose to order, you can rest assured it will be a meal full of rich colours and flavours. Everything on the menu also comes with vegan and gluten-free alternatives, making it a great choice for any type of diet or preference.

Currently, you can find Hustle N’ Flow at four different locations: San Pedro, Marbella, Benahavis and Gibraltar. Thanks to the uncompromised quality and fresh menu, the franchise has grown into a highly recommended and award-winning brand. No matter which location you visit, you can be sure to enjoy the very best quality of food and service, guilt free.

6. Max Beach, Mijas Costa

A final favourite worth mentioning along the sunny coast is Max Beach. This is a complex consisting of a gym and beach club with two restaurants. The Max Beach restaurant is a modern spot with stylish decor and relaxed vibes. There is plenty of seating both outside and inside, making it possible to enjoy around the clock every day of the year. For breakfast- and brunch-goers, there are currently two menus worth knowing about.

First of all, Max Beach has a regular breakfast menu full of inviting dishes such as bowls, shakshuka, breakfast burritos and artisan bread. Each dish is priced around €10, with fresh juices and smoothies costing €8.50. This can be enjoyed every day of the week before lunch.

There is also a Sunday brunch menu listed. This is a deal offered from 10 am to 4 pm on Sundays at €29 per person. It includes some snacks on arrival, a breakfast dish and a selection of desserts. You can also include 2 hours of bottomless cava/mimosa (€18 per person) or Moet Chandon (€48 per person) for a bubbly brunch.

Details of Max Beach
 • Where: Autovía del Mediterráneo, Km 198, 1, 29649 Mijas, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 10 am to 1 am (Breakfast & brunch served until 12:30 every day)

Additional brunch spots

Finally, I want to list some spots that I have yet to try, but that are definitely on my list. The following restaurants are highly rated brunch spots that I will visit in the near future and report back on if they are as good as the recommendations above. Let me know if you try them – or have any other recommendations I should check out!

 • Dezentral, Marbella
 • Rachel’s Eco Love, Marbella
 • BrunchIt, Marbella & Malaga

Find and enjoy the best brunch in Costa del Sol

In this guide, I have listed and gone through what are, in my opinion, the very best restaurants for breakfast and brunch in Costa del Sol. What makes the list even better is that all locations apart from Max Beach are dog-friendly. This means that your four-legged friend can also tag along for the meal.

With locations around the large areas of Marbella and Mijas and a variety of offerings, I hope you are able to find something that fits what you are looking for. I will also keep updating the guide and add more recommendations if I come across other spots that hold the same standard of quality. Until then, enjoy!

 6. Figaro
 7. El Higuerón

 9. Golf restaurants
Dinner plate and glass of red wine at a romantic restaurant

When I moved from Malta to Spain, one of my main worries was that I wouldn’t find the same type of great restaurants that I had grown accustomed to in Malta. Eating out is one of my favourite things to do and in Malta, I felt spoilt for choice. But luckily, I quickly discovered that the restaurant scene was just as good – if not even better – in Spain.

Living in Mijas, I have had the pleasure of trying out restaurants all over the Costa del Sol area. This includes cities such as Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas Pueblo, La Cala de Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona.

In this guide, I have compiled the very best romantic restaurants in Costa del Sol I have tried so far. All recommendations are tried and tested by me. As I stumble upon more romantic restaurants that hold the same level of quality, I will keep updating the guide with the freshest recommendations.

Romantic restaurants in Mijas, Marbella, Fuengirola and more

I believe that these recommendations are a bit different from what you will find in other guides, simply because they are mostly restaurants that I have stumbled upon by luck and not found from recommendations myself. It’s a mix of big names and hidden gems.

Without further ado, these are my top recommendations for romantic restaurants in Costa del Sol.

1. The Playwright – Elviria, Marbella

Decor and dessert from Playwright

The Playwright is hands down my absolute favourite restaurant in the area and one of the best restaurants I have tried in general. The location is chic, fun and unique – simply perfect for a date night.

You might come to Playwright for the insta-friendly decor, but you will stay and come back for the amazing food, drinks and service.

In addition to the amazing food made from fresh, seasonal ingredients, Playwright is a restaurant serving up dinner and a show. On weekend nights, you can enjoy live music from local talent while sipping on handcrafted cocktails. It’s a bit of a splurge, but that’s what makes it perfect for a proper date night.

The Playwright, Details
 • Where: C / manzana, local 8 – 11 pueblo los arcos, km 191 Elviria, 29604 Marbella, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 6:30 pm to midnight
 • Website: http://www.theplaywrightmarbella.com/
 • Contact: 952 83 08 68

2. The Harbour – Marbella

The owners of Playwright also operate another restaurant, named the Harbour Marbella. The menu is similar with the same, amazing food quality. But here you will be able to enjoy a view of the ocean and the Marbella harbour.

The harbour marbella

The Harbour is another romantic restaurant perfect for a date night or another special occasion all year round. But the absolute best time to visit is at Christmas. Then, the restaurant is transformed into a Christmas dream.

With large nutcrackers, a Santa station and lots of other magical decor, it’s the most Christmassy restaurant in Marbella. If you have kids, they will for sure enjoy the Santa and Disney visits scheduled many days throughout December.

The Harbour, Details
 • Where: Real Club Marítimo Marbella, 29602 Marbella
 • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 1 pm to 11 pm
 • Website: https://theharbourmarbella.com/
 • Contact: 952 86 55 34

3. Trocadero Arena – Marbella

Food and drinks at Trocadero Arena

Grupo Trocadero is a chain of restaurants with several locations in Costa del Sol. The location I have visited so far is the beautiful Trocadero Arena in Marbella.

Our first visit there was due to winning a 2021 Valentine’s Giveaway that included a meal at the restaurant. It was a romantic evening full of good food and good service so of course, it’s been a pleasure to go back.

The menu is extensive with a mix of international dishes and sushi and a whole load of unique cocktails. If the weather allows for it, you can sit outside and watch as the palm trees sway in the wind and hear the waves crash in the sunset.

Trocadero Arena, Details

4. La Scala – Marbella

Dinner at La Scala

La Scala is a beautiful Italian restaurant where you will feel at home. The restaurant is decorated like a living room with cosy decor that truly matches the homecooked food being served.

In addition to homemade pizza and pasta, the menu is full of hearty dishes that taste like they have been cooked by an Italian grandmother. And while you’re there, you need to check out the Tiramisu, as it’s one of the best I’ve ever had!

Read more in my La Scala review!

La Scala, Details
 • Where: Urb. Real de Zaragoza, 62, 29604 Marbella, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 1 pm to midnight
 • Website: https://lascalamarbella.com/
 • Contact: 951 56 93 62

5. La Pergola – Mijas

After falling in love with La Scala quickly after moving here, I got some great news in 2021: The owner of La Scala was opening a second location in Mijas. La Pergola is an Italian restaurant with the same style and homecooked meals as La Scala, located in Mijas Costa, a bit outside of La Cala de Mijas.

La Pergola is an amazing restaurant where you get a lot of value for your money. As a result of its high quality of food and service, it is frequently fully booked on weekends. Take a quick trip to Italy without having to leave the country with this authentic and amazingly romantic restaurant.

La Pergola, Details
 • Where: Urbanización las Mimosas, 3, 29649 La Cala de Mijas, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 6 pm to midnight
 • Website: https://lapergolalacala.com/
 • Contact: 951 66 90 71

6. Figaro – La Cala de Mijas

As a big fan of La Scala and La Pergola, I was delighted when I found out that the owner would open its third restaurant in Costa del Sol. This was not another Italian restaurant, but a fine-dining experience by the name of Figaro. The restaurant opened at the end of 2022 and at the beginning of 2023, I was finally able to experience it for myself.

Figaro is simply the best restaurant I have tried in Mijas and a perfect choice for a romantic date. The decor is stunning, the service is great and the food is simply delicious. It is open for lunch in the daytime and dinner in the evening, seven days a week.

Figaro, Details
 • Where: Calle Ronda, 34, La Cala de Mijas, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm (lunch) and 7 pm to 11 pm (dinner)
 • Website: https://figarorestaurantlacala.com/
 • Contact: 951 74 42 46

7. El Higuerón – Fuengirola

El Higuerón is a restaurant located a bit up from the road in a big building with large windows to give the most beautiful view of Fuengirola and beyond. If you’ve ever passed this restaurant while driving on the A-7 you’ve probably been intrigued about what it is.

With large spaces both inside and outside, there is room for many guests at this romantic restaurant. But you should still make sure to book in advance to ensure you get a table. You can also sit in the bar for some crafted cocktails with a stunning view.

The restaurant has a varied menu with a mix of traditional Spanish and international dishes. If you are a fan of fresh seafood or good-quality meats, El Higuerón is definitely a good choice. The price point is also quite good considering the quality of food and service offered.

El Higuerón, Details
 • Where: Salida 217, Autovia de la, 29640 Fuengirola, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 9 am to 11 pm
 • Website: https://elhigueron.com/
 • Contact: 952 11 91 63

8. Arara – Fuengirola

Arara restaurant

In Fuengirola, very close to El Higuerón Restaurant, you will also find the Hilton Hotel El Higuerón. This is a beautiful hotel perfect for a romantic getaway for a night or two with a unique rooftop pool and lots of good restaurants. While some might prefer the Michelin-mentioned SOLLO by Diego Gallegos, my favourite is Arara.

This is a bistro bar also by Diego Gallegos that is full of colours and flavours. With Southern American flavours (including one of the best guacamoles I have had in my life) it is more fun and playful while still being romantic and elegant. Perfect for a flavourful, delicious date night.

Read more in my Arara review!

Arara, Details
 • Where: Av. del Higuerón, 48, 29630 Benalmádena, Málaga
 • Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 7 pm to 11:30 pm and Friday to Sunday also 1 pm to 4 pm
 • Website: https://www.ararabistrobar.es/
 • Contact: 607 60 02 25

9. Golf clubhouse restaurants in Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol, also known as Costa del Golf, is full of golf courses. This is of course great news for eager golfers, but it should actually also be of interest to foodies. That is because many of the golf clubhouses have their own elegant, romantic restaurants with beautiful views and delicious food.

You normally don’t have to be a member of the golf club to enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants. So if you want a nice meal after golf, or just want to try something different, I recommend you to check out some of the following “golf restaurants”:

 • La Terrazza at La Cala Golf (Mijas)
 • Calanova Restaurant at Calanova Golf (Mijas)
 • The Green Label at Chapparal Golf Club (Mijas)
 • La Sierra Restaurante at Cerrado del Águila Golf (Mijas)
 • Hacienda Los Naranjos at Los Naranjos Golf (Marbella)
 • La View at Los Arqueros Golf (Marbella)
Food at golf restaurants

Romantic dinner with a glass of white wine

The restaurants listed above are of course only a small selection of the many romantic and fine-dining restaurants found in Costa del Sol. I only recommend restaurants that I have tried and genuinely believe are worth the recommendation. If you can think of any restaurants that you believe fit on this list, please let me know and I will be sure to check them out!

Valentine’s dinner in Costa del Sol

The restaurants mentioned in this guide are all perfect for anything from a casual date night to special occasions and everything in between. And one day they are especially perfect for is Valentine’s Day.

If you are planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year with a meal out, I truly recommend these restaurants. Just remember to book early in advance as the day books up quickly!

If you want to enjoy a meal out but prefer going for brunch or lunch instead of dinner, you can also check my guides on the best restaurants for lunch in Mijas and the best restaurants for lunch in Marbella.

Enjoy your romantic meal out!

Pros and Cons of Adopting a Pet https://dinewinelove.com/pros-and-cons-of-adopting-a-pet/ https://dinewinelove.com/pros-and-cons-of-adopting-a-pet/#respond Tue, 07 Dec 2021 19:18:31 +0000 https://dinewinelove.com/?p=4925 Are you looking to introduce a four-legged member into your family? Learn more with my list of pros and cons of adopting a pet.

]]>
Are you looking to introduce a four-legged member into your family? Adoption is always the way to go, but it is also important to know what you are getting yourself into with the process. Learn more with my list of pros and cons of adopting a pet.

Pros and cons of adopting a pet

The many benefits of having a pet

Having a pet comes with a lot of benefits. In addition to some obvious ones, such as more physical activity if you take your dog out for daily walks and less loneliness as you have a companion, there are a lot of health benefits that can be linked to pet ownership. Studies have listed benefits such as fewer heart attacks, better blood pressure, better psychological well-being and more among pet owners. Needless to say, deciding to get a pet can be a joyous and beneficial one.

Of course, getting a pet is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Especially over the holidays a lot of pets are given as gifts that end up getting returned or neglected. It is therefore important to carefully think about the responsibility of owning a pet before getting one for yourself or your family.

There are several ways to get a pet but for me, adoption is the only way to go. Again it is important to realise the responsibility of not just pet ownership but the act of adoption. There are of course a lot of benefits, but also some “drawbacks” to think about when adopting a pet.

Pros of adopting a pet

Let’s start off with the positives. There are of course many benefits of adopting an animal rather than going out to buy one. In addition to the overall benefits of owning a pet, there are some you get specifically when adopting.

1. You help an animal in need – and free up for more animals

When adopting a pet, you are choosing to help and take care of an animal that needs a new home and family. Every living being deserves a good life. You can choose to help an animal in need of a home by adopting it. If you adopt from a shelter, it can also mean that you take part in freeing up space for more animals that need somewhere to stay while waiting for their forever-family. Therefore, you might end up saving several animals by adopting one.

2. You can create a better life for an animal who deserves it

All animals deserve a great life with a loving owner, right? Sadly, not everyone will get one. No matter why the animal has ended up for adoption, it sure deserves a second chance at a good life. Pets in shelters might have gone through some sort of trauma – if nothing else, simply from being at a shelter – but it doesn’t have to be their full story. By choosing to adopt a pet you give them the chance for a better life, something they definitely deserve.

3. It’s often more affordable

In addition to the nice benefits of knowing that you are taking in an animal that really needs it, it is also a fair point to bring up that adoption can often be a lot cheaper than buying a pet. Especially when it comes to dogs, it can be quite expensive to buy one directly from a breeder. When adopting, normally the only thing you will need to pay is a small adoption fee. In some cases you can even do it completely free (such as with private adoptions).

4. Get to know more about the pet’s personality

If you choose to adopt a pet from a shelter or professional, you will normally get to know quite a bit about the animal. In addition to any background information they might have about the pet’s “previous life”, you will always get a full health check and information. Animals in shelters are normally microchipped, neutered, fully vaccinated and have a passport all ready for you.

Two dogs in a cage

Cons of adopting a pet

The act of adopting an animal is a kind and selfless one that will be sure to bring you much love and joy. There are many, many benefits of making the choice to adopt a pet. But it is good to also be aware of some potential drawbacks before making your choice.

1. You can’t be too picky or expect a specific breed

When adopting a pet you should have an idea of what you are looking for; the type of animal, the size, any special requirements etc. At the same time, you can’t expect to start looking for a specific breed or very specific type of animal to adopt. The type of animals up for adoption will vary a lot and they all need a home. This means that while you can make some choices to fit your lifestyle, to ensure the best quality of life for your pet, you can’t be too picky.

2. The pet might come from trauma

Not all pets that are up for adoption will have had a traumatic experience of being beaten or dumped into the woods. But nevertheless, they will all have experienced some sort of trauma. This means that the pet you adopt might be very scared or timid at first. Other animals might be aggressive. This will for sure improve with time and training, but it might require quite a bit of work to get there.

3. It might take a while for the pet to get settled

No matter what type of background the adopted pet has, it will always take some time for it to settle in its new home and family. Experts say that the process for adopted pets to get settled can take anything from a few weeks to several months. In my opinion, it has taken more than a year. You will need to be patience and be aware that your pet’s personality might change a lot as it gets more comfortable.

4. The process might take a while

Not only can the process of your pet getting settled take a while, but the actual adoption process might be a slow one too. This is because most shelters require quite a bit of paperwork and checks to be completed before you can bring your new family member home. Even before you get to that, it might take a bit of research and thinking to figure out what you are on the lookout for. Private adoptions might go quicker, but you should be extra cautious and make sure to not be naive if you go for that option.

Top tips on how to adopt a pet

Of course, the pros easily weigh out the cons. And by taking your time with the process and not rushing anything (or being naive) you can find a pet that will be the perfect match for you.

Start by thinking about which type of pet you want and any personality traits or requirements that are important for you. While you can’t be too picky, it is important that you have an idea of what you are looking for. Then you can contact your local shelter(s) to get more information and schedule to come by for a look.

What to do if you are not ready to adopt just yet

If you or your family can’t commit to owning and taking care of an animal at the moment, there are other options available. If you want your kids to learn more about pets before getting one of their own or you just want to help out any way you can, you can consider the following:

 1. Sponsor an animal: Many shelters and pet charities offer the option to sponsor an animal. Normally you can support the animal with a weekly, monthly or yearly sum. Often you will then get updates on how the animal is doing and you can visit it to check in.
 2. Volunteer at a shelter: Shelters always need volunteers that can help out with cleaning, dog-walking or other tasks. Contact your local shelter and offer to volunteer on a regular basis or when you have time.
 3. Offer pet-sitting or pet-walking: Many pet owners need someone to check or walk their pets while they are at work or travelling. This is a great way to be around pets – for fun or as a business.
 4. Foster a pet: Many shelters and charities also need families that can foster pets while they wait to be adopted. This can be anything from a few days up to months or years. If you can’t committ for the rest of an animal’s life, but want to help out, this is a great idea.

Not sure how to navigate all the restaurants and bars along Costa del Sol? Check my top recommendations for wine bars in Mijas and head out for a glass (or bottle)!

Click on the restaurant names below to jump to that section or keep scrolling for the full guide!

What are the best wine bars in Mijas?

 1. Pura Cepa
 2. Pampa Tablas y Tapas
 3. La Bodeguita
 4. Vinoteca Barolo / Gourmet y Vinos
best wine bars in Mijas

In between the big cities of Málaga and Marbella, you’ll find the quaint municipality of Mijas. Up in the mountain (Mijas Pueblo) and along the coast, this municipality has hundreds of bars and restaurants waiting to be explored. Most bars and restaurants will have a decent offering of wines, but if you want a grand selection, you should head to a wine bar.

Four great wine bars in Mijas

A wine bar, vinoteca in Spanish, is a bar specialising in wine. The bar might offer other beverages and some food too, but their main selling point is an extensive selection of different wines. The wines found at Spanish wine bars are often mainly (or exclusively) Spanish wines. They might be very local from the municipality and small vineries (bodegas) in the area. Some wine bars also offer international and well-known brands on the menu.

If you are looking for a spot where you can enjoy a glass of wine and some nibbles, then check out these great wine bars in Mijas.

Also check out my list of the 6 best lunch restaurants in Mijas.

1. Pura Cepa (La Cala de Mijas)

Pura Cepa is an exquisite wine shop and bar located in the city centre of La Cala de Mijas. The bar specialises in wine and gin & tonic. They offer hundreds of Spanish wines to try as well as many unique gins. There’s also a food menu with cheeses and tapas should you feel peckish for some nibbles.

Want to learn more about the wine bar?
Read my full Pura Cepa review.

2. Pampa Tablas y Tapas (Mijas Pueblo)

Pampa Tablas y Tapas might be categorised more as a tapas restaurant than a wine bar, but I believe it is a great recommendation for both categories. The mountain village of Mijas Pueblo has a lot of restaurants for tourists (and locals) to check out but not everything is of the same quality. Pampa Tablas y Tapas is one of the best ones available with delicious food, great service and lots of wine.

At this wine bar, you will find a wide selection of Spanish and imported wines. Among others, the menu includes one of my favourite (local) wineries: Bodega Malvajío.

3. La Bodeguita (La Cala de Mijas)

La Bodeguita is a newer wine bar in Mijas. It is located in La Cala de Mijas, a bit up from the main city centre in a beautiful white building in the Urbanización Jardín Botánico. The wine bar has a large outside area perfect for sunny days, as well as lots of seating (and grand decor) inside. An extra plus is that the establishment is very dog-friendly with water and treats for four-legged visitors.

The menu is extensive with local and foreign wines as well as gins, beer and other alcoholic beverages. If you are not sure what to order, the staff is very knowledgeable and happy to recommend something for your liking.

4. Vinoteca Barolo (Calahonda)

Vinoteca Barolo, also known as Gourmet y Vinos, is a newer wine bar located in Calahonda. This is a gourmet shop and wine bar in one. This means that you can visit the shop to buy some nice bottles of wine and gourmet food to enjoy at home, or you can sit down at one of their terraces for the bar menu. The wine bar serves both local and international wines, by glass or bottle.

Support local wine bars in Mijas

Above you will find four favourites for wine bars in Mijas. With a good selection of wines to try out and amazing service, they are all worth a visit. Local businesses need our support to stay afloat and two of the wine bars listed here (3 & 4) are newcomers. Therefore you should check them out for a glass of wine or two!

Are you looking for the best restaurants in Malta for a meal out? Then you’re in luck as this guide is full of amazing options!

Best restaurants in Malta by DineWineLove

Maybe you’ve already seen me say it before: Malta is a tiny island with a lot to offer. One area where the island does particularly well is in the restaurant scene.

In Malta (and Gozo) you will find hundreds of restaurants waiting to serve you their specialities. Of course, not all restaurants are breathtakingly amazing, but there are some popular spots really worth checking out. In addition, there are some hidden gems that definitely deserve more recognition.

In this guide, I will go through some of the very best restaurants in Malta for different occasions and niches. I have already written in-depth guide on each topic discussed below so for the full recommendations, you can click on the embedded guides throughout this article.

No matter what you are craving or which occasion you are dining out for, I am confident you’ll find your perfect match from my recommendations!

Local food, cuisines and restaurants in Malta

Malta is a small island located in the Mediteranean sea with Italy and Tunisia as the closest neighbours. The restaurant scene is heavily influenced by these neighbouring countries and other international cuisines.

Local, Maltese cuisine has some similarities to Italian food but is in the end quite unique. Traditional specialities include Lampuki pie (fish pie), rabbit stews, goat’s cheese, vegetable patés and pastizzi. Maltese restaurants will often serve homemade, hearty meals full of flavours made from local ingredients. Local delicacies can also be bought from small kiosks and pastizzerias.

While you will find local restaurants all over the islands of Malta and Gozo, there are also a lot of international restaurants within different cuisines. Walk around the cities and you’ll see a mix of Italian restaurants, British pubs, American commercial chains and fine dining.

What most restaurants in Malta have in common is that the food holds a very high standard. While you can find a lot of high-quality dishes for a good price, good service is not always a given. But the restaurants I recommend always provides quality on all parts: good food, good service and an overall good experience.

Romantic restaurants

What better way to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones than with a high-quality lunch or dinner? Some of the best restaurants in Malta for a romantic meal out are:

 • Sciacca (Valletta and St Julians)
 • Blue Elephant (St Julians)
 • Chophouse (Sliema)

At these restaurants and my other recommendations, you will get an amazing meal that is worth your money. Do you want to learn more? Then read my full guide on romantic restaurants in Malta.

Dog-friendly restaurants

If you wish to bring your dog while going out for a meal, you’ll be happy to know that Malta has a lot of pet-friendly restaurants. At these restaurants, you can bring your whole group, including four-legged family members, for a decadent meal. There’s even a restaurant that has its own dog menu!

Michelin restaurants

Malta first got included in the 2020 Michelin guide. Today, the island has more than 30 Michelin-mentioned restaurants. This includes my absolute favourite restaurant in Malta: KuYa. If you want to impress your date or enjoy a memorable meal, check out one of the Michelin restaurants in Malta.

Brunch restaurants

In between breakfast and lunch you will find brunch – a trendy and tasty meal that often involves a glass of prosecco (or five). Luckily, many restaurants in Malta has caught on to this trend and offer late breakfasts with special deals. Find all the very best ones in my full guide on where to find the best brunch in Malta.

Pizza restaurants

Malta might not be located far from Italy but that doesn’t mean you can expect to find perfect Italian cuisine here. In fact, a lot of the pizzas being served are of quite poor quality. Luckily, this doesn’t go for all restaurants. In fact, I have a full article discussing the very best pizza in Malta with five high-quality pizzerias.

Delivery

If you feel like having a nice meal where you don’t have to do any cooking, but don’t want to (or can’t) go out, there are still options for you. Thanks to various delivery services, you can get food from your favourite restaurants right on your doorstep. In my two guides covering the topic, you can read more about and find the best businesses for food and alcohol delivery.

Explore the best of local cuisine at a food festival

Every year, Malta hosts a lot of local events and festivals. These cultural events include a few food and wine festivals where you can explore the best of local restaurants and food-businesses. How about joining the local strawberry harvest or celebrating some local breweries?

Find out more about these festivals (and other events) in the following guide:

And there you have it: a compilation of some of my favourite guides related to restaurants in Malta. This article will be continiously updated as I create more guides related to dining out in Malta. I recommend to bookmark or pin it for future reference.

Did you know that Malta has 5 Michelin-starred restaurants? In total, 34 restaurants located on the archipelago can be found in the latest Michelin guide. And in this article, I go through them all + previous mentions!

Keep reading to learn all about the history of Michelin in Malta, before we dive into all the Stars, Bib Gourmand and Plate Michelin restaurants in Malta. Are you ready to try something noteworthy for your next meal out?

Michelin restaurants in Malta

History of Michelin in Malta

Michelin is known as the most authoritative restaurant guide globally. Thanks to Malta’s high-quality food offering with a long list of astonishing restaurants, this tiny island made it to the list.

Malta was first included in the Michelin Guide of 2020. The small island was recognised as a culinary hub by Michelin. Therefore, the island was and still is included alongside the 30+ other countries already listed in the guide. So far, Malta has appeared in four Michelin guides – from 2020 to and including 2023.

What are Michelin stars?

The Michelin star is one of the most prestigious awards out there. It is also the dream of most chefs and restaurant owners. A restaurant can receive from zero to three Michelin stars.

The star rating system has been around for almost 100 years, first introduced in 1926. When being reviewed, the restaurants and their dishes are evaluated based on the following criteria:

 1. Quality of the ingredients used
 2. The flavour and technique of the cooking
 3. The chef’s unique style and personality
 4. Value for money
 5. Consistency between visits

In addition to the stars, the guide also lists restaurants in the categories Bib Gourmet and The Michelin plate.

List of Michelin restaurants in Malta

Malta has so far been included in the Michelin guides of 2020–2023. In those four years, the island has snagged six Michelin stars and close to 40 mentions in total. Here you can find a full map view and descriptive list of the current and previous Michelin stars, bib gourmands, and plates of Malta restaurants.

Michelin star (6 restaurants)

Malta currently has six 1-starred Michelin restaurants. Three restaurants were awarded a star in the initial 2020 guide. Two more additions were added in 2021 and a final one in 2023. The previously awarded stars were all kept in the updated guides too, but so far, no restaurant has been awarded more than one star. Notably, three out of the five Michelin-starred restaurants are located in Valletta.

Here I take a closer look at each of the Michelin-starred restaurants and their current tasting menus.

Fernandõ Gastrotheque, Sliema (2023)

Fernandõ Gastrotheque is a modern bistro offering a unique culinary experience. The bistro was listed as a plate mention in the Michelin guides of 2021 and 2022, and in 2023, it snagged its first star.

Everything is carefully crafted with passion to ensure the best outcome possible. On the food menu, you’ll find Spanish-inspired appetizers, modern risottos and exclusive main courses. Wine is also an important part of the offering of this restaurant – with more than 600 labels to choose from.

Bahia, Balzan (2021, 2022, 2023)

Bahia offers an a la carte menu and some tasting menus, with all dishes boasting seasonal ingredients and flavours. In addition to a selection of meat and seafood at fair prices, Bahia offers a full vegan menu and options for a vegan tasting menu.

The current tasting menus consist of 8 courses at €90 per person or 5 courses at €70 per person. Optional beverage pairings are available at €50 and €40 respectively.

As of March 2023, the UK chef Simon Rogan has taken the lead of the food offering.

The current tasting menus consist of 14 courses at €145 per person. Optional beverage pairings are available at €90 for a wine pairing and €150 for a premium pairing.

De Mondion is a restaurant located on the top floor of the luxurious hotel Xara Palace in Mdina. This is a modern, elegant and intimate eatery serving international fine dining. The best part of the restaurant might be its terrace offering al fresco dining with stunning views of Mdina and surrounding cities.

The menu is limited but offers something for everyone, with dinner served Tuesday to Saturday and a lunch menu offered on Friday and Saturday. There are a la carte menus in addition to a seasonal tasting menu.

The current tasting menus consist of 7 courses at €115 per person. Optional beverage pairings are available with wines of Malta or wines of the world at €75 and €85 respectively.

Noni, Valletta (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Noni is a Mediterranean restaurant located in the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta. Under chef Jonathan Brincat, Noni’s philosophy focuses on local, Maltese and Mediterranean dishes with a touch of classic French cuisine.

The restaurant might not look like much from the outside but as you step inside, you’ll be met with a fine-dining experience worth its star. NONI’s menu consists of traditional dishes with a twist, yet clean flavours and delicate servings.

The current tasting menus consist of 9 courses at €125 per person. An optional wine pairing is available at €75.

Under Grain, Valletta (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Under Grain is an elegant and fine-dining restaurant serving international, contemporary cuisine. The restaurant is part of the concept Grain which also has an eatery (Grain Street, Bib Gourmand) and rooftop bar (Over Grain).

Under Grain is the flagship restaurant of this establishment and an haute couture dining experience. Here you can enjoy a culinary journey unlike any other with modern twists on classic, French cuisine. Choose dishes from the a la carte menu or go for the tasting menu experience.

The current tasting menus consist of 7 courses at €125 per person. Optional wine pairings are available at €75 and €125.

Bib Gourmand (4 restaurants)

The Bib Gourmand is the second category of the Michelin guide. This category is named after the Michelin mascot, Bibendum. In the category, Michelin highlights restaurants that serve good food at an affordable price.

Every year, the guide sets a price range that should cover a starter, a main course and a dessert in order to be eligible for this category. For 2023, the set price is €36. In other words, you won’t have to break the bank to try these restaurants:

Michelin dinner

Grain Street, Valletta (2022, 2023)

The newest addition to the Bib Gourmands of Malta is Grain Street, added in 2022. This is a restaurant from the Grain concept, where flag store restaurant Under Grain has been awarded a star since 2020. Street is a far more casual dining experience, offering small plates that can be shared alongside wine served by the glass. Fun and delicious, open for breakfast and dinner every day of the week.

Terrone is a simple seaside restaurant serving delicious, Maltese-inspired Italian food. At this restaurant, you can expect fresh seafood, delicious pasta, and fun flavour combinations. Quality is an important part of the Terrone experience with high-quality produce and service.

Rubino, Valletta (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Rubino is another restaurant combining Maltese and Italian flavours and techniques. The bistro was first established as a confectionery shop in 1906 and still serves the traditional cassata Siciliana today. Here you can expect a homecooked meal that will melt on your tongue and make its way into your heart. The menu is changed daily so you will have to check their blackboard for the menu of the day.

Commando, Mellieħa (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Commando is a modern restaurant offering comfort food in unique packaging. The menu combines traditional flavours with experimental ideas. Local produce and tradition are important parts of the dishes available, but there’s also a clear British influence.

The Michelin Plate 2023 (24 restaurants)

The Michelin plate is the third Michelin guide category. This is also the category that most Michelin restaurants in Malta fall under. Michelin Plates are given to restaurants that serve good food and therefore deserve to be recognised in the guide, even though they might not be “ready” for a star yet.

Some of the following restaurants might start out as simply being mentioned and then move up from Plate to a star or two in the future. An example of this is Fernandõ Gastrotheque, which was awarded a plate distinction in 2021 and 2022, and now has a star.

In 2023, five new restaurants were awarded Plates. Most of the restaurants recognized in previous years still hold their title, but a few are no longer included. I will get to those in the next section but first, let’s take a closer at the Michelin Plates of Malta 2023.

The Fork and Cork, Rabat (2021, 2022, 2023)

The Fork and Cork is a charming and intimate restaurant specialising in delicious Mediterranean food. They offer seasonal menus with dishes crafted from fresh and seasonal ingredients. Ta’ Frenċ, Xagħra, Gozo (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Ta’ Frenċ is a beautiful and romantic restaurant located “in the middle of nowhere”. The restaurant is a hidden gem set in a restored farmhouse. From the very first moment, as you enter the stone archway in the courtyard, Ta’ Frenċ exudes a magical atmosphere. The menu crafted by Chef Brincat has something for everyone with classic pasta and meat dishes. A unique addition is the flambé & carvery section offering flambéed starters, mains and desserts.

Tmun, Mgarr (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Kuya, St Julian’s (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

KuYa is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in Malta. They serve Asian fusion with a mix of Korean, Thai and other cuisines. Every dish has a unique twist and a lot of flavours. The brand first started out as a food truck but now they have an establishment in St Julians. This restaurant is a casual and affordable hideout. Briju is a restaurant focusing on sustainable gastronomy. Chef Rafel sources 90% of his ingredients from nearby farms and also makes use of local salt and oils. The menu offers a mix of Maltese and Mediterranean dishes and flavours all crafted and prepared by Rafel. Expect delicious seafood and pasta dishes with seasonal ingredients.

59 Republic, Valletta (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

The Harbour Club, Valletta (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

The Harbour Club is a modern restaurant with minimalistic decor and atmosphere. The establishment has a stunning view of the Grand Harbour in Valletta. That view, in combination with the dishes being served, is more than enough. The menu has Mediterranean dishes with a French influence. The goal is for diners to have a holistic experience that influences all senses.

The Golden Fork, Attard (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

The Golden Fork is an elegant restaurant worthy of its name. It’s tucked away in a restored townhouse and offers a true Maltese atmosphere. The menu consists of Mediterranean dishes in a fine dining setting. The restaurant was opened by chef Letizia Vella in 2019 and was quickly recognised for its high quality. The food here is not only delicious but also beautiful to look at (and photograph).

The Medina, Mdina (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

The Medina of Mdina is possibly the best restaurant in the city. This restaurant is hidden away in the narrow streets of Mdina, located in an old townhouse that has a lovely garden in the back. The ambience is romantic and intimate, hidden away from all hustle and bustle. The menu consists of dishes crafted from local ingredients and traditions, but with some modern and unique twists that are sure to highlight the chefs’ talents.

Root 81, Rabat (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Root 81 is a modern and more laid-back restaurant that serves good cooking. There’s a terrace with great views as well as an inside dining room for a more quiet experience. Chef Robert Cassar here combines Mediterranean flavours with modern and international influences. The whole idea of the name (and concept) of this restaurant is that “good food starts from its roots…”

Guzé Bistro, Valletta (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Guzé is located in a classic, Maltese palazzo cellar with brick walls and intimate tables. Here you will find traditional Maltese dishes served beautifully – in generous portions. There’s a mix of seafood and meats served with classic, home-cooked sides. An unmissable gem.

Previous Michelin Plates in Malta (7 restaurants)

As mentioned, there are some restaurants in Malta that have previously been awarded the Plate recognition that are not listed in this year’s Michelin guide. Nevertheless, they might still be good options to check out, based on this previous achievement.

Hammett’s Macina, Senglea (2020, 2021, 2022)

Hammett’s Macina is a true pearl offering ethnic, Mediterranean cuisine. Here you’ll find unique twists on classic, Maltese dishes and ingredients. The food menu is boasting of dishes that can be enjoyed solo or shared with friends. Hammett’s also has three other establishments in Malta: a gastro bar in Sliema, Hammett’s Mestizo in St Julians and The Sheer Bastion event venue in Senglea.

Susurrus, St Julian’s (2020, 2021, 2022)

Susurrus was previously located on top of the Corinthia hotel in St Julians, but is now replaced by Sole by Tarragon. The restaurant has a stunning terrace that overlooks the nearby bays. The terrace is perfect for casual, al fresco dining in the daytime and a modern and high-end dining experience as the sun sets.

Mezzodi, Valletta (2021)

Mezzodi is a delicate restaurant located in the heart of Valletta, as part of Domus Zamittello Hotel. It is an Italian restaurant, but with unique inspiration and twists from Maltese and Arabic influences. The establishment is set up as a modern bistro that is perfect for both date nights and casual lunches.

Capo Crudo, Valletta (2020, 2021)

Capo Crudo is yet another restaurant with a stunning location and terrace. Here you will get a great view of Sliema and Manoel Island from your table. As for the food, there’s an extensive menu covering seafood, pasta, meats and more. The restaurant specialises in fresh fish and also aged meats.

Rampila, Valletta (2020, 2021)

Rampila is a gem of a restaurant in Valletta with a hidden terrace. The establishment is traditional Maltese and the same goes for the cuisine served. With influence from Italian and Mediterranean flavours, the menu offers a selection of pasta and risottos, meat and seafood. A peaceful atmosphere and classic flavours in the heart of Valletta’s history.

Barracuda, St Julian’s (2020, 2021)

Barracuda had possibly one of the best locations of all restaurants listed here. It received stunning reviews in 2020 and 2021, but has since changed owners and permanently closed.

Should the restaurant open again, Barracuda has a stunning terrace overlooking the ocean with a direct view of Balluta Bay, Spinola Bay and further. Of course, the location also makes it the perfect spot for local seafood, with Meditteranean flavours and local ingredients in perfect harmony.

Lord Nelson, Mosta (2020)

Another restaurant that has closed since its Michelin mention is Lord Nelson in Mosta. This was a Mediterranean restaurant offering fine dining at affordable prices. The restaurant building used to be a wine bar and tobacconist dating back to the 1960s and could be recognised from its bright blue door.

Michelin plate

Other Michelin-worthy restaurants in Malta

The establishments listed above are just a handful of the many spectacular restaurants in Malta. To finish off, I want to list a few more high-quality restaurants that I suspect will be included in future Michelin guides:

 • Wigi’s Kitchen (St Julians)
 • Blue Elephant (St Julians)
 • Adesso (Valletta)
 • Crust (St Julians)
 • Hammett’s Gastro Bar (Sliema)

All in all, Malta is an impressive culinary hub for such a small country, and it is great to see its recognition. I can’t wait to see which surprises the next Michelin guide brings along. Until then, enjoy the mentions from 2020 to 2023.

Looking to try a new restaurant for your next meal out in Costa del Sol? Then read my Irrazional review to find out if this is the spot you’re looking for!

Irrazional restaurant review

Sometimes, a fresh start is just what is needed. For months, I had the restaurant Tikus Gastrobar noted on my bucket list of local restaurants to try. And then suddenly one day, the restaurant’s social media changed its names and details. A new restaurant popped up in no time, and I didn’t waste much time before checking it out…

What is Irrazional?

Irrazional is a newly opened restaurant in Mijas, Costa del Sol. The restaurant is actually a rebranding of the popular and highly recommended Tikus Gastrobar. With a new name, concept and design, Irrazional brings a fresh and exotic atmosphere to the La Cala de Mijas boulevard. And the owner of the new restaurant just so happens to be the owner of the DineWineLove favourite Pura Cepa.

Irrazional is the perfect spot for fun, friends and food, as the slogan says. Book a table in the sun and enjoy hours of fun times with good friends and delicious food (and wine).

The menu, food and drinks at Irrazional

Tikus Gastrobar was widely known for its great food and experimental dishes. So, of course, Irrazional can’t offer any less.

Irrazional has a four-page menu (if you include the desserts) with various dishes to share or enjoy on your own. There’s a good balance of seafood and meat, and a few vegetarian options as well.

For the main dishes, though, it’s the meat that triumphs. This makes Irrazional a great option for meat-lovers. The menu includes cow (chop or matured) from the Basque Country, T-bone or sirloin steak, as well as a unique white sausage and iberian pork burger.

I recommend ordering a few different dishes for the table to share and enjoy. Irrazional is a restaurant where you should indulge and splurge, while exploring new flavour combinations. To perfect the meal, ask for a bottle of wine from Malvajío (not listed on the menu, but available from Pura Cepa).

Highlights from the Menu

 • Starter: Bao bun with Iberican bacon, Thai BBQ & chutney (€9)
 • Main: White sausage burger, iberian pork & brioche (€12)
 • Side: Sauteed broccoli or French potatoes
 • Dessert: Yuzu & white chocolate truffles (€7)
 • I would steer clear of: Parsnip puree (too liquidy) and chocolate creme brulee (good, but too large and sweet for me)
Food and drinks at Irrazional restaurant, La Cala de Mijas

Verdict

I never got the chance to test Tikus Gastrobar, but I think Irrazional might be the upgraded version. In addition to an impressive menu and reasonable price point, the restaurant scores highly thanks to its excellent service. Not everything I’ve ordered has been a total hit, but the overall experience is impeccible and more than weighs up for it. I forsee that Irrazional will be full of groups of friends and families enjoying the sun while sipping on fresh cocktails and indulging in experimental dishes.

If I could just give the restaurant one recommendation, it would be to update the wine list to include wines from Bodega Malvajío. I was disappointed when I did not see this local, Pura Cepa staple on the menu, but quickly realised we could get it anyway. While I enjoy the “secret menu” part of it, I think it should be included for everyone to enjoy. Until then, simply ask for it!

Irrazional at a Glance

 • Cuisine: Spanish/European (modern)
 • Price point: €€
 • Live music: No
 • Dog-friendly: Yes (at last outside)
 • Parking on spot: No

Did you know that Malta has a lot of yearly events, festivals and festas? Here you will find a full overview of the very best festivals in Malta, with updated dates for 2024!

Best festivals in Malta

I’ve said it before and I will say it again: Malta is a tiny country with lots to offer. Across the island of Malta (and Gozo) there are so many events hosted every year that are worth a visit. From free music festivals to extravagant wine and fireworks events, there is something for everyone.

In this guide, I go through some of the biggest and most popular events and festivals in Malta – as well as some local hidden gems. The events are all (normally) hosted on a yearly basis. Learn more about the events or scroll down for a full calendar of events and festivals in 2024, sorted by month.

Music festivals in Malta

Not a lot of international artists add Malta to their European tour list, but there is a lot of local live music in Malta. And several times a year, you can get a proper show from a music festival on the island. Here you will find everything from classical music and jazz, to international pop artists and DJs.

Music festival

The Valletta International Baroque Festival (Valletta)

Looking for something classical? Then the yearly Valletta International Baroque Festival is for you. The festival was established in 2013 and sees more than a week of classical concerts and performances in Valletta.

As the name suggests, the focus is on baroque music. But there are also acts of early music and contemporary works inspired by the baroque.

One of the main stages of this festival is Teatru Manoel, a beautiful venue that is actually the oldest working theatre in the world.

The Valletta International Baroque Festival 2024: 11th-28th of January
Ticket price: €10-€20 per concert (or get an all-access pass)

AMP Lost & Found Festival (St Pauls Bay and around Malta)

Annie Mac Presents: Lost & Found Festival! This is a music festival and dance party focusing on house, techno, drum and bass and other genres that are sure to get the party started. In short, imagine pool parties, beach clubs, cocktails, and good times.

What’s unique about this festival, is that it combines live music and partying with wanderlust and the exploration of Malta. The event is held across 8 venues (plus some beach parties). Don’t worry about getting around as festival transport operates around the island.

The hosts decided not to run the festival in 2023 so that they could spend the time creating something extra special for the 2024 edition. No news have been shared yet, but I can’t wait to hear more!

AMP Lost & Found Festival 2024: TBA
Ticket price: Festival pass from €166 (Early bird)

Earth Garden (Ta’ Qali, Attard)

Earth Garden is Malta’s largest alternative music festival. The festival has been held annually since 2007 and takes place in the Ta’ Qali national park in Attard. You can go for a day, head back and forth over the weekend, or stay at the camping site.

There are five music areas where you can enjoy a mix of alternative and modern music genres, including world music, techno, funk, hip-hop and more. And while Earth Garden is categorised as a music festival, there is so much more to explore than just music.

In addition to live acts from local and international artists, there are retreats, workshops, yoga, massages, an ethnic market and a fun park for all ages to enjoy. If you wish to sleep there, you can choose between camping and glamping.

Earth Garden 2024: 6th-9th of June
Ticket price: €45 for a weekend ticket and €50 for camping

GħanaFest (Floriana)

Għanafest is quite different from the other festivals listed here, mainly due to its local focus. This is the festival for anyone who wants to explore the Maltese heritage and local talents. GħanaFest features three full-packed days of live folk music in addition to Maltese gastronomy, craftsmanship, literature, and more.

The festival’s name (Għana) is the traditional Maltese folk singing. This traditional folk style has different versions, including a flamenco style known as ala Bormliża. In other words, if you live in Malta or just want to explore more Maltese traditions, this is a great festival to check out.

Sadly, there are not a lot of fresh updates to find about GħanaFest, so it might not be hosted anymore. If any updates are shared, I will be sure to add them.

Ghanafest 2024: TBA
Ticket price: TBA (Previous years: Concession €5 for one day, €8 for two days)

Malta International Jazz Festival (Valletta)

Malta Jazz Festival is a yearly music event hosted every July, outside of Our Lady of Liesse Church in Valletta. The festival was established in 1990 and is currently organised by Festivals Malta.

No matter if you are a fan of jazz or not, this is a festival worth checking out. In previous years, the festival has featured world-renowned jazz musicians including Natalie Cole, Betty Carter, Wayne Shorter and Chick Corea.

There is a mix of local and international acts with a focus on contemporary jazz. In short, there’s something for everyone!

Malta Jazz Festival 2024: TBA
Ticket price: Single day tickets from €20, two day tickets from €30

Isle of MTV Malta Festival (Floriana)

Would you have liked to see international, major artists like Lady Gaga, David Guetta, Snoop Dog and Sigala for free? That’s exactly what the Isle of MTV Malta festival has been and still is offering!

Isle of MTV is an outdoor, free music festival held in Malta. Ever since 2007, a selection of current, popular artists has set foot on the MTV stage. The event runs on blissful summer nights in July and is 100% free to attend. It’s one of the smallest music festivals in Europe but still sees 10,000-50,000 attendants a year.

The festival was postponed twice due to the Coronavirus but was finally back in 2022. The entrance is free of charge and open to anyone. Just make sure to be early as there will for sure be a queue (and maybe some traffic chaos to get back home).

Isle of MTV Malta 2024: TBA
Ticket price: Free!

Glitch Festival (Rabat)

Glitch is a newer house and techno festival that was first hosted in 2016. This is the festival for anyone looking for a proper party with live acts performing at pool parties, cave raves and boat parties.

The festival already has a good reputation and international following. In fact, the techno magazine Mixmag named it a “House and Techno paradise“. Previous lineups have included Amelie Lens, DJ Bonobo, Nina Kraviz, Boston 168 and more.

Glitch Festival 2024: 13th-16th of August
Ticket price: Two-day access from €79

Food and drink festivals

Malta has a great restaurant scene with an impressive selection of local and international food and drinks. If you want to explore more of the local offering, you should check out some of these food and drink festivals in Malta.

Street food festival

The Strawberry Festival (Mġarr)

The strawberry festival – or Festa Frawli, as it’s known locally – is an annual event to kick off the strawberry season in Malta. The festival takes place in Mġarr, in the main square outside the Parish Church. Mġarr is known for its sweet strawberries and for this yearly event, the picking, packing and tasting of the strawberries begin!

In addition to an abundance of strawberries and strawberry-themed decorations, the festival includes live entertainment and different competitions for children. For more than 10 years now, locals and tourists alike have taken part in the strawberry season kick-off. The one-day event is sure to be fun for the whole family and also a great way to explore more of Malta’s local produce and culture.

Strawberry Festival 2024: 7 of April
Ticket price: Free

Marsovin Wine Festival (Valletta)

Marsovin is a Maltese winery and producer of premium wines. The winery was founded in 1919. At the last (2019) wine festival, they celebrated their 100-year anniversary. With a unique 100th Anniversary Wine, Marsovin invited to a celebration of wine and culture at Hastings Garden in Valletta. And hopefully, the wine festival will be able to commence again soon.

The Marsovin wine festival is a yearly summer event held at a July weekend. You can buy tickets in advance or just show up, queue and pay at the entrance. By paying €20, you get €20 worth of wine tokens in addition to a wine glass from the festival – which is yours to take home. Exchange your tokens for different tasters or glasses of wine, or opt for a full bottle if you have a favourite. You will be able to explore a variety of Marsovin wines, as well as local food and entertainment.

Sadly there has not been any updates on the festival since the 2019 edition. In August 2023, the winery hosted a wine event called “Antonin Under the Stars” in Gozo, which combined wine and music. Hopefully, a new festival will be introduced soon.

Marsovin Summer Wine Festival 2024: TBA
Ticket price: TBA (previously €20)

Malta International Food Festival (Valletta)

Do you want to explore local (Maltese) food alongside high-quality international cuisines? Then check out the Malta International food festival in Valletta! This annual food festival is a festival that just keeps on growing. In fact, it’s Malta’s largest food event with more than 50,000 attendees.

The set-up of the festival is very straightforward: Entrance is €2 for anyone aged over 12 and it’s a street food-style event. This means that you can browse the different restaurants, food brands, and stores available and pick where you want to try something.

There are more than 50 exhibitors across 15 different cuisines. Simply purchase tokens and exchange them for the food or products you would like.

PS: There is also a Gozo edition of the event (see more under the Gozo section below)

Malta International Food Festival 2024: 8th-14th of July
Ticket price: €2

Delicata Wine Festival (Valletta)

Delicata, Emmanuel Delicata Winemaker in full, is Malta’s most awarded winery. The family winemaker was established in 1907. Today it produces local wine brands including Gran Cavalier, Medina, Victoria Heights and Pjazza Regina. You can find Delicata wines at most supermarkets and once a year, you can explore them all at the Delicata Wine Festival.

For one summer weekend a year, Delicata transforms Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta into an outdoor wine and culture festival. There’s live music, local food stands, and of course a massive selection of wines to try out.

Entrance to the festival is free, but in order to try the wines, you will need to purchase a purse of 24 wine coins (including a festival souvenir glass). The price for this is €20 and tickets can be purchased in advance online.

Your entrance fee includes an exclusive wine glass as well as tokens to try the wines of your choosing. You can top up your glass with samples or buy full bottles, all while enjoying a spectacular atmosphere and stunning views.

Delicata Wine Festival 2024: 9th-11th of August

Farsons Beer Festival (Ta’ Qali, Attard)

If you prefer beer and cider to wine, then the Farsons Beer Festival is a great option. Farsons Group is a local producer and distributor of beers and beverages, as well as wholesale and retail of food and beverages. In addition to being the producer of Malta’s very own Cisk beer, Farsons also represent international brands including Carlsberg, Skol, Bulmers and Old Mout Ciders.

At the Farsons Beer Festival, you can sample drinks from various brands while enjoying live music and local food. The event is hosted outdoors and across 10 days. Entrance is free and you simply choose which food and drinks you want to opt for!

The Beer Festival has been hosted ever since 1981 and keeps growing each year. As the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled, the 2022 edition was the 40th edition. And now the festival is fully back with yearly events full of great beet, live music, food and fun.

Farsons Beer Festival 2024: TBA
Ticket price: Free entry

Malta Craft Beer Festival (Valletta)

A newer beverage festival in Malta is the Malta craft beer festival. This festival hosted only its second edition in 2019 and understandably had to postpone the 2020 and 2021 events. But I am hopeful that they will be back again!

As the name suggests, this festival is all about craft beer (and ciders). Here you can explore a selection of international breweries. The list is long but has included Brussels Beer Project, Mikkeler, Brewdog and To Øl, as well as local favourites Lord Chambray and The Brew. In addition, there are local restaurants/food trucks and live music.

This festival is held at the open space of Saint Elmo Fort in Valletta. You can buy your ticket in advance or at the door. The ticket includes a glass and drink tokens. Try out different breweries, join some events (beer tastings etc), and relax in the summer sun.

Malta Craft Beer Festival 2024: TBA
Ticket price: TBA (Previous years €18 for 1 day)

PINTA – Valletta Beer Festival (Valletta)

In 2022, a new beverage festival also came about. PINTA is possibly inspired by (and introduced as a successor to) the Craft Beer Festival in Valletta. At this festival, visitors can explore more than 300 types of authentic beers from around the world. The festival also features live music acts from local artists and other types of entertainment for the whole family.

Just like Malta, Gozo has some cool music festivals that attract an international audience and well-known performers every year. One of these festivals is ABODE on the Rock – an electronic/house festival hosted by the London promoters ABODE.

ABODE on the Rock festival was first hosted in 2018. Since then, locals and tourists alike have joined the party each summer. The lineup of ABODE includes international DJs and artists from all over the world. The 2024 lineup included Luuk van Dijk, Max Dean, wAFF and many more.

Malta International Food Festival Gozo Edition (Xewkija)

The Malta International Food Festival is a yearly event in Valletta (previously Mdina) that also has a Gozo edition. This special edition of the festival is hosted in Xewkija, Gozo a few weeks prior to the Malta event. This is a street food festival where anyone can come and check out the different stalls available.

The stands provide a mix of local and foreign cuisines, with for example European, Asian and other nationalities being served up. In addition, there are breweries and wineries present, ready to serve the perfect drink pairings. In other words, there’s everything you need in order to have a fabulous time.

Other events and festivals in Malta

In addition to the above-mentioned festivals, there are a lot of other yearly events that are worth checking out. This includes cultural happenings, local festas, and of course, fireworks!

Malta fireworks festival

Carnival (Valletta and Gozo)

In Malta, the carnival is a big part of Maltese culture. It has been celebrated since at least the mid-15th century and attracts a big audience to this day. The carnival is hosted in February, during the week leading up to Ash Wednesday. There are celebrations all over the island(s) but Valletta and Gozo have the most festivities.

In Valletta, you can watch the carnival parade with local floats and marching bands. For a different type of celebration, head to a masquerade ball. Or if you prefer something more low-key, you can find a fancy dress party in the streets of Paceville (St Julians).

Malta Carnival 2024: 9th-17th of February

Malta International Fireworks Festival (Valletta and more)

Malta has a unique fascination for fireworks. During most summer nights (or days), you can see or hear some fireworks being shot up. And on some specific nights, there’s a spectacular show lighting up the sky. That’s exactly what you get from the Malta International Fireworks Festival.

This is simply a festival dedicated to fireworks. During April, there are various shows across several various cities in Malta. And at the end of the month, Valletta’s Grand Harbour hosts the grand finale.

Local fireworks factories design a lot of the fireworks displays. The festival itself is organised by the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority, to commemorate Malta’s accession into the EU on the 1st of May, 2004.

Malta International Fireworks Festival 2024: TBA (April)
Ticket price: Free!

Valletta Film Festival (Valletta)

In addition to an abundance of music festivals, Malta has other cultural festivals with an international following. One of which is the yearly Valletta Film Festival. This is Malta’s largest cinematic event with around 10,000 visitors a year.

The film festival is produced by the non-profit organisation Film Grain Foundation. Film screenings include both local and international films of different genres, where some have a free entrance. There are also master classes, workshops and competitions during the weeklong event.

The festival has not been hosted since 2019, but in May, a new film festival called Mediterrane was announced. This was launched by Malta Film Commission as a Mediterranean-focused film festival hosted in Valletta – possibly the “new Valletta film festival”.

Valletta Film Festival 2024: TBA
Ticket price: TBA

Malta Pride (Valletta)

Malta Pride is the annual event for the LGBTIQ+ Community in Malta (and beyond). The event is all about inclusion and equality. Here everyone is welcome to join and celebrate, and doing so is free!

Since the first Pride march in 2004, Malta Pride has grown to a full week of celebrations. The main event is the Pride March in Valletta. After the march, there’s a Pride concert and an after-party. Dress up in fancy dress or colourful clothes and celebrate every colour of the rainbow!

The festival is now rebranded as EuroPride Valletta and includes a free EuroPride concert. Last year, this headlining artist is no other than the sensational Christina Aguilera.

Malta Pride 2024: 6th-15th of September
Ticket price: Free!

Notte Bianca (Valletta)

The Notte Bianca festival is a one-night event held in Valetta every October. It is one of the largest celebrations of arts and culture in Malta. During this night, Valletta truly comes alive.

The celebration is nocturnal. It starts as the sun sets and street lights get turned on. During this fall night, restaurants keep open until late and local artists take to the streets. Entertainment is hosted both indoors and outdoors and includes art exhibitions, theatre performances, live music, and special offers.

Notte Bianca 2024: 5th of October
Ticket price: Free!

Birgufest (Birgu)

Birgufest – or Birgu by Candlelight – is a beautiful, local celebration of light, art and culture. Birgu is one of Malta’s oldest and most historic cities in a picturesque location. What started as a small, local celebration has turned into a weekend of entertainment and insta-worthy sights. Now visitors from all over the island head over to see the streets full of candlelights, chandeliers and other beautiful, artistic light displays.

It is totally free to roam the streets of Birgu and photograph the beautiful lights lined down the streets and houses. The festival is also a great opportunity to explore more of this city, with local shops, museums and historical buildings keeping open and offering discounted prices. Check out some of the exhibitions, taste some local food, and enjoy the unique ambience.

Malta Book Festival (Ta’ Qali)

Another yearly, cultural event worth checking out is the Malta Book Festival. This annual event is a celebration of national and international books and authors, for all ages. The festival was first held in 1979 – then under the name Malta Book Fair – and has grown immensely ever since.

Today, the event showcases more than 50 exhibitors and attracts an audience of more than 50,000 visitors. The full lineup for the 2024 edition will be released within the summer.

Malta Book Festival 2024: 6th-10th of October
Ticket price: Free!

Festas in Malta

The festas of Malta deserve a category of their own. If you really want to explore the Maltese culture and celebrate like the locals, you need to attend a festa.

Festa in Gozo

A festa is a local village feast: a religious event and patriotic celebration. The festas are held in honour of patron saints. Each village celebrates a different saint or two, depending on the local churches. Each church in Malta is dedicated to a different saint which again gets its own festa.

While the celebration is religious, it is also a party like no other. The night before the actual feast, the local band club hosts an evening of live music, drinks, local food, and fireworks. It is like a combination of a carnival and a small festival. The roads are closed to traffic, the streets are decorated with lights and banners, and the drinks are cheap. And to complete it all, the night ends with a spectacular fireworks display.

Are you dreaming of a fabulous wine cellar, but not sure where to start? Wine collecting doesn’t need to be intimidating but might require some preparation. Get started with this DineWineLove beginner’s guide to building a wine collection, brought to you by the licensed sommelier Raichelle Carpio!

building a wine collection

The origins of wine can be traced back to 9,000 years ago in China. In Western Asia, evidence of winemaking suggests that it has been around since the Neolithic period in Iran—that’s 5,400 to 5,000 BCE. And in Europe it has been around for even longer, dating back to 12,000 years ago in Greece and 10,000 years ago in France.

There’s no doubt that wine has been tied to a lot of memories and experiences for people in all these years. For some, these experiences have aroused a fascination that leads them to collect wine. Some who have a clear passion for wine have grown an enormous collection, while others are still getting the hang of it. It might seem like a daunting task, but building a wine collection is actually a lot easier than you may think.

How to Get Started on Building a Wine Collection

Anyone can have a wine collection. It doesn’t need to be massive or expensive right at the beginning. Take it one step at a time and jot down notes from this beginners’ guide on building a wine collection.

1. Set Your Intentions

Before anything else, a self-evaluation must be in place. Ask yourself the question, why are you starting a wine collection?

There’s no one definite answer here. Maybe you had fun on a recent trip, and it got you interested in wines. Perhaps you want to have a stock of perfect housewarming presents ready to bring at any moment. You might also be looking at it as an investment. Either way, knowing the reason behind starting a collection will help you gauge the amount of effort you’re willing to put in.

Why is it important to set an intention for your collection? For instance, those who are doing it for profit might need to pay close attention to the prices, insurance, documentation needed, etc, while those who are doing it for fun can focus more on their personal preferences.

2. Set a Budget

While you don’t need to break your bank account to start a wine collection as a beginner, budgeting should still be in place. Your budget dictates the lengths you’re ready to go through for your collection and the price range of the bottles you can collect.

Beginner collectors don’t need to spend five or six digits on the initial purchase. Unless your budget can cater to several bottles of wine for that price, your collection may end up with only one bottle. Consider starting your collection with bottles that range from €50 to €500. If your budget is generous enough, you can have a threshold of €2,000. This allows you to purchase more bottles without overspending.

Remember that the budget is not only for the wine itself. You might also be spending money on storage, insurance, consultation fees, documentation, etc.

Aiming for diversity in your collection is always a good starting point for beginners. To learn the basics before purchasing your first bottle, you can check out information such as guides to Spanish Wines. Read up on wines from different regions and countries and see what sparks your interest. It’s best to explore your options while you’re gaining footing in this new endeavour.

3. Start with What You Like

As a beginner collector, you may listen to what you like and follow your heart. In this sense, you will focus more on your enjoyment. When the time comes that the wine has reached its peak, you can open the bottle and savour every drop of it. This gives a bit more personal value to the collection as well.

Do you have a favourite bottle of wine already, or a favourite grape? Then start exploring variants of (but also contrasts to) what you already know. Head to your local wine shop or order some wine delivery.

With the tips below, you can start to think more about what you like to have in a bottle of wine. Consider the taste profile, the age, and the price. It’s up to you—as long as it adds value to your life, collection experience, and happiness.

Get to Know Your Wine

Knowing your preference will also come with an understanding of wine. Through learning more about the topic, you’ll know what you prefer in terms of origin, taste, price, and age. In addition, it’s easier to make an informed decision when purchasing your first few bottles if you already know a thing or two about wines.

The following are three key points to know when it comes to which wines to collect:

1. Prices

Like most things, wine can be cheap or expensive. When looking for a bottle to add to your collection, you’ll have to look at the current retail price, historical price trends, and auction history. Additionally, the cost of producing the wine and its perceived value will affect the price of the bottle.

2. Cellaring Period and Lifespan

Take note that there are wines that are best served within a few years or less. Other wines will need 10, 20, or 50 years to age. Knowing the cellaring period and lifespan of your wine is important no matter if you are planning to enjoy it yourself or sell it in the future.

3. Provenance and Pedigree

If you really want to get to know your wine, you need to look at the finer details such as the provenance and pedigree. Provenance is the source, life cycle, and storage of the wine. Pedigree involves the genetic characteristics of the wine. If you are not already familiar with these terms and their effect on the wine, it’s a great opportunity to learn more while building your wine collection.

To be more educated about wines, consider reading magazines, history books, vintage reports, and other informative publications surrounding this topic. There are also a lot of accessible wine facts and figures available online.

Invest in Proper Storage

A wine fridge could suffice for wines that you intend to consume within a few weeks. However, long-term wine collection demands proper storage. This means maintaining the right temperature, humidity, and lighting in your storage area.

All these factors affect the taste and the preservation of the wine. Two direct examples:

 1. The wine will taste flat when stored at a high temperature.
 2. Corks will shrink with low humidity. When this happens, oxygen penetrates the cork, and sooner or later, you’re left with vinegar.

To ensure that your wine will gain value and flavour in your collection – and not go to waste – it is really important to invest in proper storage.

To Sum Up: Wine Collecting Doesn’t Need to be Intimidating

Collecting wine may have a bougie reputation, but this doesn’t mean a beginner can’t enter the scene. Whether you’re starting with a low budget or a huge one, you always begin by purchasing wines you actually like and build from there.

In the process, you need to educate yourself to determine the best wines that will add value to your collections. Keep your wine stored properly to preserve them so that, one day, you’ll get to enjoy them when they’re at their peak.
